Air Conditioning
This summer we have had record temperatures, and the inside of a car when you are stuck in a traffic jam on the hottest day of the year is not a nice place. Unless you have air conditioning. It's an even worse place to be if you have air conditioning and it's not working.
More and more cars are now fitted with air conditioning, and it has it's own special requirements for maintainance and repair. The system is filled with a special gas at high pressure, and there are some jobs on the car that will need the system to be de-gassed before they can be undertaken. The system then needs to be recharged with gas before it will work again.
All staff at DMS are Gas Certified air conditioning engineers.
If your air conditioning is not working the most likely cause is theat the system is out of gas. Gradually over a long period, the gas can seep out, causing a drop in performance and eventually no cooling effect at all. Alternatively, there may be a leak in the system somewhere-perhaps a seal has split, a stone may have damaged a pipe or corrosion eaten into a component. DMS has the equipment available to service your air conditioning. We can recharge your system, or if a leak is suspected we can perform a vacuum leak check with a gas detector. If a component is found to be faulty we can price it and quote you for repair.
If you notice an unpleasant smell when you operate the air conditioning, you may have a problem with bacterial growth within the evaporator unit behind the dashboard. The moisture that the air conditioning removes from the air can provide a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi and these smells have been linked to flu-like symptoms known as 'sick car syndrome' as well as smells and allergic reactions. DMS can provide a service that will kill off these bacteria and fungi and de-odourise the car.
As with most systems, regular use is better than long periods of idleness. Use your air conditioning regularly and it will be more reliable. In the winter months you will find that the windscreen will mist up much less if you have the air conditioning on, as it removes water from the air, which is what condenses on the screen. It is recommended that you have an antibacterial service annually, and a full system check and re-gas every 3 years or 36,000 miles.
